The rich lands around Grayson were home to the Lower Creek and Cherokee Indians thousands of years before the first European settlers first found their way to this picturesque part of Georgia. The first European settlement started in February 1784. A State Legislation Act fixed the price of land at 3 shillings an acre and limited settlers to 1000 acres maximum.
By the early 1880’s, some of the early figures in what would become Grayson had arrived. Reverend James Patterson McConnell and his wife, Susan Arendell McConnell, had a home and a store near the intersection that is now the center of Grayson. In that store, he was able to get a Post Office established, with himself as first Postmaster. The town was given the name “Trip” at the suggestions of J.D. Spence, a leading merchant and public figure at Lawrenceville. During that time, Trip was the center of a thriving farming community and agriculture was important to every step of the economic development of Grayson.
John E. Jacobs would eventually serve as the first mayor of Grayson, but before that he was the Postmaster. While he was postmaster the name Trip was changed to Grayson and in 1902 the town of Grayson officially came to be. Grayson grew quickly and attracted merchants, a railway, settlers, educators and religious leaders. With the increase in settlement, schools and churches began to establish themselves in order to serve the community.
Today, Grayson has a lot to be proud of including the great schools and the parks in town. Tribble Mill Park is a 700-acre park with fishing and hiking trails. You will also love being close to Atlanta, a thriving city with a wide variety of great attractions. Stone Mountain Park is a popular vacation destination located on 3,200 acres of natural beauty and features a wide variety of fun, family activities. Among the new attractions are the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coke and Turner Field. There is also of course all the history and culture in this city that has played a large part in the story of the United States. When you are back in Grayson, you will love the quiet and calm that comes with living in this great Southern small town.
